Every experience we have is defined by our consciousness. Key advancements in artificial intelligence, pain management, and mental health may hinge on our understanding of consciousness and its origins.
Decades of research have produced numerous theories of consciousness, each with its own definition, while some overlap with others. Many are supported by substantial empirical evidence, but a comprehensive understanding that consolidates these diverse perspectives is still needed.
This program is a product of the Accelerating Research on Consciousness initiative, led and funded by the Templeton World Charity Foundation. It comprises five innovative research projects, each following a Structured Adversarial Collaboration model. This approach critically tests two or more theories simultaneously, merging best practices in Open Science with large-scale collaborative research.
